Cleaning Tips to Perk Up Your Porch

Whether your porch wraps around your house or is only big enough to fit an armchair, you can turn it into a cozy nook for reading, sipping a glass of wine, or getting away from it all (without really leaving). You don’t need to spend a lot of money or time prepping your porch. A few simple tricks are all it takes to create an outside oasis.

Hang some drapes. Add a little romance—and privacy—to this outdoor space by installing curtains. All you need is an inexpensive rod and tab-top curtains (consider ones in a durable, weather-resistant fabric, many of which are as soft as cotton) to give your porch a breezy, laid-back vibe. Bonus: On sunny days, the curtains can also be pulled shut to provide shade.

Paint your floor. Set a clear divide between indoors and out by giving your porch floor a few coats of a bright, invigorating paint. Remember to choose a shade that complements the exterior of your house.

Think bright. Patterned cushions or throw pillows add instant chic to a porch swing or a comfy chair. If you already own cushions, freshen them up by laundering them with a lush smelling detergent. Think of it as cleaning and aromatherapy in one!

Lay down a rug. Pull your porch together with an indoor/outdoor area rug or a couple of cotton area rugs. (Don’t forget to buy a rug pad to keep the carpets from sliding around.) Add colorful garden stool too. It can pull double duty as both side table and extra seating.

Include cozy throws. Fill a basket with soft, comfortable throws and quilts laundered with laundry detergent and dryer sheets in soothing scents. You'll appreciate the smell when you curl up for a nap in your newly revitalized outdoor room!
