More than one third of adults in the United States are obese. This is mainly due to poor lifestyle habits. Americans are busy and rely on convenience grab and go high calorie food.  Take a close look at the food in your pantry. If it is pre-packaged or you can not pronounce one or more of the ingredients then it isn't good for you. Go ahead and toss all the unhealthy junk food and replace it with nuts, seeds, fresh fruit, veggies and whole grains.

2. Get up off of the couch.

watching TV

If you just can not miss your favorite prime time television shows get up and move while you are watching TV.  Invest in an elliptical or treadmill. If you can't afford exercise equipment get up and move during the commercials.  Some simple exercises you can do while watching TV are squats, walk up and down your stairs, jog in place, jumping jacks, sit-ups and crunches.

3. Park your car further from entrance doors.

When we are in a hurry our instinct tells us to park as close to the entrance doors as possible. Next time you are dropping your kids off to their extra curricular activity, grocery shopping or going to work slow down and park further away from the doors of the building.  Taking those few extra steps will help you to be less sedentary.

4. Shop for groceries after you have eaten a meal.

Grocery shopping on an empty stomach not only is bad for your wallet it may also tempt you to put unhealthy foods in your grocery cart.  Make sure you have eaten a nutritious meal before heading to the grocery store.

5. Go to bed earlier.

Adults need 7-9 hours of sleep a night in order to be healthy.  Poor sleep habits can lead to obesity, heart disease, and depression. If you are getting less than seven hours of sleep a night go to bed earlier or set your alarm for a little later in the morning.

Making small lifestyle changes will help you get healthy and feel good.
