5 Cold Weather Fitness Tips

In the winter the temperatures drop and the days get shorter.  I love running  but it is very difficult to stay motivated when the cold weather hits.  If you can't think of any good fitness ideas because you are stuck indoors below are some great tips to help you get your butt in gear this winter.

Create a Fitness Space in Your Home

Designate a room or part of a room for a home gym.  It can be a corner of your living room, or the spare bedroom that nobody uses. Place a yoga mat, some lightweight dumbbells or kettlebells, a jump rope, TV and DVD player and your favorite fitness videos in the room or space. You can also hang fun motivational posters to help encourage you to use your new home gym.  Make sure you keep your fitness equipment away from small children to prevent injury.

Schedule Your Workouts

Healthy adults should participate in one hour of physical activity at least 4 days a week. If finding the time to work out is a challenge schedule it on your calendar.  You can also purchase a fitness diary, like The Fit Book, which helps you keep track of your fitness goals and schedule. Once you have scheduled your workouts make sure you stick with it. Set a reminder on your smart phone or computer until you get used to the new routine.

Participate in Winter Sports

Many communities have amateur sport leagues for adults run by the parks and recreation department or the local YMCA.  These leagues are relatively inexpensive, help you stay fit and are great opportunities for adults to socialize.  Check with your community center, parks and recreation department or YMCA to see what sports they offer for adults in the winter.

Get Outside

If it gets below zero where you live in the winter this may not be an option for you. However, for many of us the cold temperatures are tolerable with proper clothing. Skiing and snowshoeing are fun physical activities you can enjoy during the winter. Going for walks or running can also be fun in the winter as long as you are wearing warm outerwear.  Get creative! Building snow forts and snowmen with your children is a great workout during the cold months of the year.

Turn on Your Favorite Music and Dance

Dancing to up-tempo music is a great cardio workout.  You can do this alone or with your kids.  A good cardio workout like dancing, done in the mid afternoon or early evening will also help you get a better night's sleep.

Exercise and physical fitness helps you maintain a healthy weight, protect you from diabetes and heart disease, helps you deal with stress and promotes healthy sleep patterns. The cold winter months make it harder for many Americans to keep up with their fitness routines.  With the right tools and creative ideas you do not have to put fitness on the back burner this winter.
