New Children's Books Teach Kids About Responsibility

Raising responsible kids is very important to me. My five children all have to help out around the house, keep their rooms clean, and pick up their toys. Because I have a large family everyone must work together and help out in order for our household to run smoothly. I am always searching for new and creative ways to teach my kids about responsibility.

Author and Rabbi Kenneth Ian Segel recently published two entertaining children's books that teach kids about responsibility.  "The Amazing Sparkey" is a cute story about a wonder dog named Sparkey.  This dog does math, sings, and reads.  He also helps the mom with her grocery shopping. When strange things start to happen in their home Sparkey's family had to work together along with their family dog to solve the mystery.

"The Amazing Sparkey," is a cute story and easy read for kids ages 6 and up.  I found the vocabulary a little too advanced for smaller children.  When I read it to my four-year-old he fell asleep.  But, my six and seven-year-olds enjoyed the book.

Segel's second book, "A Big Decision," helps children learn about their responsibility to themselves, to others, and how to maintain a balance between the two. The main character, fifth grader Jake, lives in a home full of pets.  He took great care of his pets and his close friends knew how well he cared for animals.  Once Jake turned ten he would able to attend a summer camp in June. The campers are given the opportunity to take care of animals, pick fresh fruits and veggies and ride horses.  After school ended several of Jake's friends asked him if he could take care of their pets in June while they traveled with their families.  This left the little boy with "a big decision."  After he makes his decision Jake's generosity and kindness is rewarded.

Just like the "Amazing Sparkey", "A Big Decision" is better suited for kids 6 and up.  My two elementary-school-aged kids thoroughly enjoyed the story.  Both of these books can be purchased at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com and authorhouse.com.
