Swimming is a Great Workout the Whole Family Can Enjoy

Even though summer is over families can enjoy swimming all year long at their local indoor pools, YMCA's or gyms. Swimming is a fun, low-impact fitness activity anyone can participate in. For people who are out of shape or suffer from arthritis and are in need of a good work out, swimming is a wonderful choice.

Swimming uses a majority of the major muscles in your body and an easy swim burns approximately 500 calories an hour.  A vigorous swim can burn up to 700 calories.  Water is about 800 times denser than air so every time you kick, pull yourself forward and push against the water you are getting a mini resistance workout. Swimming blasts calories and helps you build lean muscle in your core,  arms, hips, shoulders, and glutes.

Swimming burns calories, helps you build muscle and it is also very kind to your body.  You become virtually weightless while immersed in the water because water neutralizes gravity.  Therefore, swimming is very gentle on your joints and you are less likely to be injured compared to other popular sports.

If you are planning on heading to your local indoor pool with your family this fall and winter make sure you have these essentials to help make your aquatic work out more enjoyable.  Everyone should wear comfortable swimming suits.  If you are worried about the effects of the chlorine on your hair wear a swimming cap. You can also take along fun swimming caps for kids.  If your children like to dive under the water don't forget to pack Zoggs Dive Sticks.

Swimming is fun for the whole family even in the fall and winter.  You can bond with your children and enjoy the benefits of a calorie burning low impact workout from just spending a couple of hours at the pool.
